Obituary of Robert A. Mayes

A Soldier's Story: Robert A. (Bob) Mayes Command Sgt. Maj. Of the 9th Infantry Command Sgt. Maj. Robert A. (Bob) Mayes fought his final battle on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2014 after a gallant fight. Bob was born on March 19, 1928 to Willis and Rose Mayes in Lewisburg, TN. Bob married Christine Nunley in 1949 (she as well as his parents and sister Mildred Brannan of Detroit, MI. preceded him in death). During World War II he was drafted and upon conclusion of the war decided to continue his military service in the US Army. Traveling the globe and serving in many combat areas of World War II, the Korean Conflict and several tours in Viet Nam. His involvement included special assignments, academic endeavors and the completion of Combat Engineering School. CSM Mayes gave exemplary service to his country. Earning many awards, commendations and medals among which were: NDSM with OLC the 9th infantry, OLC GMOL 8th Award, WW II VM, KSM, UNSM, ROKPUC DrvMechBad w AOM (Germany), VSM, RVNCM, ARCOM w/v Device (3rd OLC), BSM w 5th OLC Civil Action MDL w/OLC, AFEM VN Cross of Gallantry w/Palm, (3rd Awd) VN Unit Citation Emblem, he pursued excellence. State-side CSM Mayes spent time in Missouri, retiring in July of 1974 at Fort Lewis after serving 28 years. Always interested in education and forever exploring new ideas, Bob received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from City University after retirement, and pursued a new career in real estate where he also excelled earning many awards for outstanding salesmanship. His true passion and love of football, especially the Seahawks, (he was a season ticket holder for many years) knowing his engagement in every game his friends knew…. no calls or visits if there was a televised game. In an ever changing society Bob stayed current with local, national and world events. Bob's interests and hobbies included gardening, boating, water skiing and the special care of his pets. Loving, cherishing and celebrating his life forever are Kim Mayes (Son); Frances Yeargin (sister), Nashville, TN.; Bonnie Pickney (Significant Other); Kyle Johnson (surrogate daughter) Atlanta GA., Glenn & Barbara Hubbard (Special Godchildren), Grand Cane, LA., James & Joan Booth, (Special Neighbors), a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends. Bob, you were an inspiration to our lives, a joy to our hearts and will be deeply missed by family and friends. WE WILL LOVE YOU FOREVER. Arrangements by Piper-Morley with Oakwood Hill 253-472-3353. Viewing will be held on Sunday, April 27th from 2 to 6 PM at Piper Morley with Oakwood Hill Funeral Chapel at 5436 S. Puget Sound. Graveside Services will be held at Tahoma National Cemetery on Monday April 28th at 11:15 AM.
