Obituary of Sophronia N. Tomaras

Sophronia N. Tomaras Sophronia N. Tomaras died the 21st of June. Born January 14, 1930 in Chicago to Charles and Alexandra Nickolaou, she is survived by husband, Fr. Anthony Tomaras, daughter Irene Supica, son Charles, son-in-law Fr. Stephen Supica, granddaughters Sophronia and Elizabeth, sister Mary Bolas, nieces, nephews, and godchildren. She graduated from the University of Chicago (BA, '48), the University of Puget Sound (BE, '64, ME, '70), and the University of Washington (Ph.D., '80). She married her husband in 1956. Following his ordination to the priesthood, and an assistant pastorate in Oakland, they served St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Tacoma, St. Nectarios Mission in Pasco (which they founded), as well as the All Saints Camp and Retreat Center on Raft Island. She was an educator for the Tacoma Public Schools, retiring in 1989 after 26 years. Her true calling was in service to the church. Over the years, she taught Sunday School, played the organ, and conducted icon painting education for both adults and children. She chaired the Diocesan Religious Education Commission and authored books for the national church. She translated 80 hymns into English for her groundbreaking hymnal, The Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom . The Trisagion will be at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Tacoma, Monday at 7:00 pm. The funeral will be at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Seattle on Tuesday at 10:00 am.
